Misty scleral lens

Postby Libster » Sun 03 Jul 2016 11:03 am

hi there just a quick question. anyone wearing a scleral lens do you have problems with the lens smearing and misting up. I have a nebulus on the centre of my left eye which means a rgp will not fit as it rubs the top off the raised nebulus. I effectively haven't used the left eye for over twenty years but have recently been fitted with a scleral. Although the comfort if good and the scleral vaults the raised scar the lens becomes impossible to see through after only an hour as the lens is so smeared up. I have had the fit fiddled with and the optom days the fit is good. Any suggestions /advice x

Hi Libster,

Welcome to the forum. I've not tried scleral lenses but I have had a similar problem with RGPs. The problem I had was with froth, lots of tiny bubbles, under the lens. The lens would be OK for an hour or so and then it would get to the point where I would have to take it out to clean it. Except it didn't need cleaning there had just been a build up of tiny bubbles. This was solved by piggybacking the lens with a soft lens underneath the RGP.

Has the optom seen your lens all smeared up? I would suggest that when you go for your next appointment you arrange your appointment so that the optom can see how little you can see with the lens after you have been wearing it for few hours.

Hi I was going to answer as I had many years of scleral wearing. It is not unusual to get a claggy lens I used to remove clean put fresh saline in and reinsert but an hour is not long so.......
Can I ask what you fill the lens with to insert it?
Could you be having a reaction to the saline?
Perhaps you could list your cleaning and insertion routine you never know I might spot something to help.i know how hard it can be believe me.
