laser treatment after graft

Postby Mousework » Mon 13 May 2013 4:28 pm

I have been researching the graft and the follow up treatment after the graft, and i understand that sight after the graph is not 100 %, my friend passed on some information from the states where they use laser treatment to fix the sight further once the graft has settle downed.

Is this done in the UK or known in Europe?

I have the preopp class tomorrow, and i will ask if this treatment is down, as its not like normal laser surgery

Don't know about the rest of Europe, but occasionally laser is used in the UK to improve the shape of a graft. And sometimes 'nicks' are done in the graft (sorry, can't remember the technical name for it) to improve the shape. But neither of those is used until after the stitches come out, as it's only then that the final visual result of the graft is known. And most of us still need contact lenses or glasses after a graft. Vision post graft is very rarely 100%!

Hi Mousework, was in the same position myself and asked a leading consultant this same question !

As usual, the answer varies :-( but generally laser-after-grafting can help with some residual optical aberrations... but... irregularities -- especially those in the stromal bed between the graft and the residual "native" tissue cannot really be helped with laser treatment. It really is a case of having to wait and find out what you're left with in terms of post operative vision and then determine whether laser treatment can help if needed. A magic bullet it is, again, as usual :-( not.

Let me know if you need any more information on this one, as I say I've just gone through the same iterations with a consultant.

Best wishes

Chris

Ha ! Unfortunately no, if I did I'd have conjured up one for myself :-)

Don't worry, you'll be fine, the surgery and aftercare for this procedure has come on a lot in the past twenty years and continues to improve.

Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Take care

Chris
