Symtoms + Lens

Postby sendricardo » Wed 17 Aug 2011 9:02 pm

Hey there fellow KC'ers...

Sorry if this question has already been asked but my eyes hurt too much to search all the threads.

I was diagnosed with KC and I already inserted INTACS into my bad eye and soon I'm going to try out those "special" contact lenses.

I wanted to know if any of you share these problems:

1- Super sensitive to your computer monitor brightness
2- Get really exhausted and unable to think after using the PC after a short period of time.
3- Get many headaches after using the PC after a short period of time.

Basically I wanted to know if any of you do share these symptoms, were they resolved after using these "special" contacts or did you have to get a graft?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Andrew, I called them "special" because they the ones KC patients use, like the RGP lens. I can't specify which one I'm going to use because I haven't been to the doctor yet. Before I see the doc I wanted to know if any of the above issues were solved with the lens or am I the only one who "suffers" these terrible symptoms specially while using the PC during short periods of time.

Oh, if they are not a specific type of lens, you may be worrying about nothing. The truth is that there are several lens types and lens materials that are used by people with keratoconus: RGP lenses, Scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, various soft lens options ... ... the list goes on and on.

The reason that there are so many is that what works well for some of us may not work at all for others. I'd embrace the possibilities of new lenses.

As to your symptoms, maybe they are understandable if you are straining to see with inappropriate lenses.

Every good wish.

Hello again,
Oh I'm not worried about what lens I'm going to get, I just hope the doctor shows me all thr available options and not the option that will fill up his wallet lol

I think the best way for my question to be answered is to ask you: are you currently wearing contacts for your KC eye? If yes, did YOU overcome the problems I mentioned? Or were they not really bothering you as much as they are a burden to me.

Regards,

Ricardo

Hiya I will try and answer but its really general as I am bundling up 34 years of contact lenses. Yup PC work drove me crazy but it was either because the lenses were not the right prescription
or the lenses I had were irritating my eyes and I was very light sensitive and yes I have overcome the problems.

Get the right contact lenses, get your PC screen positioned correctly and adjust the brightness and contrast on your screen. Make sure there is no reflected light on the screen too.

I know how you feel I have had days when I was trying to use my screen and my head hurt so much if someone had offered to hit me over the head with a house Brick I would have said Yeah Cool.

Andrew is right there are a multitude of contact lens solutions and there is no right lens it depends on you,Your KC etc.

I have had many different types and currently have a Synergeyes Clearkone Right and am about to have a brand new type in left.

So to reiterate the answer to your original question Yes been to Hell and Back using PC screen (I worked in IT for 30+ years) and only have problems now if I have overworn my contact lenses.

Hey there Anna...

Thanks for the reply, sometimes when I express my frustration I actually feel guilty when I see certain people have been suffering way much longer than me lol

I too am super sensitive to the brightness of my monitor so the brightness and contrast are always set to the minimum. I also purchased an expensive filter for my monitor that decreases the glare of my screen. So basically I've tried everything "in the book" lol

I'm happy to hear your experience and excuse my ignorance but I was unable to understand whether you experienced what I am experiencing before you started using contacts or only when you overwear them?

Btw, it would be great if you could share with us the contact you going to get for your left eye, it's always good to have an idea of what's being offered in the market before talking to the doc.

Regards,
Ricardo

Hiya I had Contact lenses before PC's were invented :D I was 12 and that was in 1966. I had a light sensitivity increase as my KC changed but Light Sensitivity for KCers is common you just manage it. I always wear polarised sunglasses when driving for instance. I have posred separately on new lens its a Profile 14 by Jack Allen.

Hi,
I am on sclerals, with 6/6 in one eye, other eye does not have KC yet.
I an super sensitive to monitor brightness, and I work in IT :( , so Im struggling with the same problems as you are.
Right now i have the brightness set to the least, and I almost always enlarge the font.
Also some people have mentioned reading glasses.I am planning to try them.
Even low light vision is very poor , still trying to figure out a way to get past that .
Will keep you posted.
Take care

Hey sarkac,

Wow you just finished describing what I'm going through too, because besides the light sensitivity I forgot to mention that just like you, I also have to increase the font (or zoom in) ALOT to be able to read the text :(

I am super surprised that even with your scleral lens you have to zoom in, I heard that if properly fitted you should be able to see much better, guess I was wrong :S

I have anti-reflective glasses that I don't use because I don't see any better, plus the reflection still hurts my eyes and I get even more headaches, but I heard that many people do feel better using anti-reflective glasses.

I'm going to private message you with my personal e-mail for you to please keep me updated with any possible solution because you clearly going through what I'm going through because I'm in the IT world too.
