Kerasof IC

Postby kehribar » Wed 04 Aug 2010 12:35 pm

Hello,

I am a KC patient from Turkey since 1998. Now I am 40 and whatever I do, I cant use Rgp lenses. Thanks God, I only had KC in my Right eye so that I can go on with glasses.

On the other hand , my doctor do not reccommend soft Lenses or even this new Kerasoft IC as I have an advanced KC in my right eye!

I really wonder now how Kerasoft IC works for advanced KC ? I wonder if anyone ever used these lenses here? Is it thick enough to work on advanced ones ?

Merhaba, foruma hoş geldiniz!

(Let me hold my hand up and confess that I copied this as it was dictated to me by a Turkish friend; I wanted to say "hello and welcome to the forum" in Turkish.)

Some forum members use Kerasoft lenses, and although I have no direct experience of them, I am sure that there will be somebody along in a moment who has.

I have beenw earing these lenses for the past 18 months or so and they do wrok well for both mild and advanced KC. Remeber though that just because a lens wors for one person, there is no reason why the same type of lens wold work for you due to the unique nature of KC.

Without these lenses I can't even see the top letter of the eye chart with my right eye which has been grafted and the unaided vision is similar to those who have advanced KC. To put is simply, it would seem that the Kerasoft IC turns all the irregular istigmatism caused by KC into a more regualr astigmatism that is relatively easy to correct.

As with any lens there are limits but the Kerasoft IC allows for a broad variety of corneal shapes and using a system known as sector amnagement the outer edge of the lens can be adapted to help suite the differnt corneal shapes by KC and to aid lens stability.

With these lenses I can wear them all my waking hours and the quality of vision is better than I got with RGP lesnes. With RGP lenses I could only wear them for upto 4 hours comfortably, this was much reduced in hot dry weather. I suffer none of these problems with the soft lenses.

There is another type of soft lens which i believe is made in Israel.

Thank you very much for your responses.

It is great to see people here who knows what it means to live with KC ! :)

I think I am gonna try Kerasoft IC lenses. What ever their performance is , they would surely provide me a better vision as compared with my current glasses.

Just as you told here, my eyes also can tolerate rgp lenses not more than 4 hours. Especially when using rgp lenses while driving in summer, the sun and naturally ac is on, they became much more painful in a shortwhile which only can be imagined by another KC patient!! :)

Anyway, thanks for the info again and I am gonna share my experience here after I got them.

Selam Kehribar

I am a contact lens practitioner with interest in KC and practice in UK, but I am originally from North Cyprus, hence speak the same tongue as you! There are currrently 3 soft lens designs for KC in UK. Kerasoft and Kerasoft IC are the most publicised ones, there are 2 other products, both called "Soft K", one manufacured by Acuity Contact Lenses in UK, and the other by Soflex in Israel. The 3 products have different design concepts to try to correct the corneal distortion caused by KC. I havent used the Soflex lens, but I am very familiar with the other two. Kerasoft is essentially what is called a "toric lens" but has a number of features to reduce the corneal irregularity and, as Gareth says, make it more regular. Acuity Soft K has a rather complex geometry aiming for the back surface of the lens to follow the corneal contour and the front surface remaining relatively regular. Therefore it works more like a rigid lens where the front surface of the lens effectivly becomes the front surface of the eye. In my experience, with some patients Kerasoft or Kerasoft IC works better, and with others Acuity Soft K works better. I am assuming Kerasoft is available in Turkey. The other option is the Synergeyes hybrid lenses with rigid centre and soft skirt, and I do know that Dunya Goz Hastanesi in Istanbul fit these, so worth bearing in mind if you cant get hold of Kerasoft or you're not happy with the outcome.

Take care and "kendine iyi bak!". Feel free to send me a pm if you need more help
