Having a lot of problems with the wear time on the old RGP's. Saturday was really bad so by seven at night I had to take them out and lie in a darkened room. Eyes still hurt like mad but I found if I pressed on(not rubbed ) my eyeballs the pain decreased. The solution was to tie a neck tie round my head so it applied pressure to my eyes. Not sure why it worked but it did. Also a bit of a downer that day as the hospital have cancelled my appointment for next week until the 7th July grrrrrrrrrrrrr

You need to go to your optometrist. If that was the appointment they cancelled at the hospital, you should contact the clinic and explain that you need an appointment.
If my eyes were so sore that I needed to 'bandage' them as tightly as you describe, I'd make my way without my lenses in directly and immediately to the ophthalmology A&E. You may need some eyedrops to help correct the situation.
Every good wish

Re: May look like a donkey but it worked
Thanks Andrew. Came to the same conclusion about ringing the hospital. They gave me the consultants secretary's number. She is going to have a word when he comes out of theatre this morning. Hopefully they can sort something. I go away on June 16th. While I am off work I can leave one lens out but it would be nice to get the ball rolling before hand. Would be interested to know why appling pressure helps though
Cheers

Well not much joy there they are all booked up. Just told me to go to the emergency clinic if it gets bad. Not much use as the hours are 8.30 to 16.30 weekdays and 9-12 at the weekends. It all tends to kick off at night, joy.

I once had an out-of-hours emergency. I went down to see my GP and he sent me to the ophthalmology ward where I was examined by a specialist and treated without delay.

Ian,
I agree with Andrew I'd take myself to an emergency clinic. I know it seems a bit OTT but as an old-timer of contact lens wear you know when something's not right even if you don't know what's causing it.
I guess you've tried the usual things such as leaving the lenses out for a few days (not that that's easy when you need them to see!), been extra careful with cleaning the lenses - you've not changed solutions have you? Or has your usual solution changed ingrediants? Just a thought have you tried reverting to the previous pair of lenses?
Hope you get sorted out soon.

Re: May look like a donkey but it worked
Hi Lia.
From my first appointment they detected a raised scar. Which I guess after nearly thirty years of lens wear is an unwelcomed possibility. My left eye is more scarred but they are not raised. Yep being good with the cleaning solutions etc. Think the only option is to get the lens out as soon as I get back from work. Using eye drops throughout the day and drinking lots of water. Off to the south of France in a couple of weeks so I can leave it out more at the start of the holiday. Guess it would be wise to build the time up again at the end. I must say the hospital have been helpful but just do not have the staff capacity. I have a feeling that volcano is involved here somewhere with the cancelations,
All the best

I have encountered many people that have suffered scarring like you describe and they have tried different lenses which has resulted in the scarring becoming less, although some scaring does remain, plus some scaring can be caused by the adavncement of the KC itself. The scaring casued by KC and lenses is distinctly different.
The lenses they have gone onto has been the Kerasoft IC lenses or the Scleral lenses, Martin C who posts on thsi forum was told he would needa ccorenal transpalnt because fo the scarring caused by his RGP lenses, but now on ther Kerasoft IC, this is no longer the case since he has been on the Kerasoft IC lenses and he gets extremely good vision with them, so a couple of options to perhaps consider once you have the eye irritation under control.

Re: May look like a donkey but it worked
Hi Ian,
There is a problem getting appointments at the hospital I attend. My current problem is that that my lenses now get covered with protein deposits.
I was on six monthly check-ups for years and this was increased to nine months and then annually. In April last year my lenses were found to be in such a state that the optometrists at the hospital I attend are now looking at ways of reducing the protein deposits. I currently wear corneal lenses and the edge lift and material have been changed. This hasn’t worked, so in February I was prescribed a pair of corneo-sceral lenses which I went to collect yesterday. Unfortunately the edges were too tight and after about an hour’s wear at the clinic they were covered in protein deposits so I left empty handed. I go back in August to try another pair (that's the next available appointment).

Re: May look like a donkey but it worked
I still use protein removal tablets once a week. I buy little tablets in Tesco and when I have cleaned my lens on a Wednesday evening (sorry, but I am 60 and set in my ways), I soak them overnight in saline with a tab dissolved in it.
Many optometrists now seem to think that protein removal is unnecessary, but it keeps my lens clear.
