KC in early childhood

Hi Friends,

I am a KC patient.

I have a kid which is 2.5 year old.

I have few questions and wondering if someone can answer.

Is there any chance that it can cause to my son...

Is it a heridity problem.

Please advise.

Hi Deepak,
The figures are that somewhere between 10% and 15% of people with KC have someone else in the family with it (in other words, the majority DON'T). The current thinking seems to be that it takes a number of different genes all coming together for KC to develop. So the chances are that your son won't have the condition. But when he does start having eye tests, it's worth mentioning your history of KC so that opticians can be on the lookout for any signs.

My daughters 10 now and late last year I made my wife have a topography scan of her eye just because she was with me at a consultation. We found she is bordelrine KC in one eye which she has had high astigmatism in all her life which changes periodically.

Even before this, my daughter was having regular eye checks and since finding my wife might be sub-clinical KC my local optometrist kindly did a topography on my daughter. Although she is proably too young to show signs of KC, it does at least give us a baseline so we know exactly what her eyes are like before she develops KC.

One thing to bear in mind is that in the past 20 years (and especially in recent years) there has been great advances in the management and treatment of KC and there is a lot of research taking palce in the US and mainland Europe.

So I'm not worried about my daughter getting KC and when we have talked about it, my daughter isn't worried about KC either.
