In the early years of the 20th century they were doing all sorts of animal experiments: bits of pig vein and artery were being grafted into human hosts as well as bits of eye.
Actually xenotransplantation goes back at least as far as the 17th Century; there was an operation in Russia in 1682 when a bone from a dog was grafted into a human host. I don't think that either the donor or the recipient survived.
