I have left this forum because the opticians part is closed to read.
Spent last 26 years fighting to have good vision and the opticians
to be open and correct in what they do.
Part of the battle sometimes is not keratoconus but the opticians.
however some have been very proffeshional along the way.
and some have been dreadful.
I wish every Keratconus sufferer all the luck in world,
and not have the problems I have come across.
House.

Re: Left This Forum because Its Not Open
The optitions part has always been closed and to be honest they don't use it so even if it were open there's nothing to see.
There are only 10 posts made by 4 optoms and the last post was 04 Nov 2007.
So if anyone wants to ask an optom a question, just post it in the main forum like most the optoms who do post place a thread in the main forum.
We do have local groups we encourage people to attend and quite often an optom will be present and mebers have taken the oppertunity to discuss concerns they may have plu share experiences with others.

Re: Left This Forum because Its Not Open
regardless it should be open.
Forum needs an open part for optoms to post in.
forum needs some changes and putting
Keratoconus first
Should be no distinction between folk that post
and people who have it or who are treating it.
would be logical to delete the section or
open a new open optoms area, or open
the current area up for everyone to read,
regarless of the content!

I agree with you. I have always thought it was a mistake to have an area of discourse that is closed to people with KC. The forum is, after all, intended as a self-help site for people with keratoconus and not for optometrists who deal with KC sufferers.
If it helps, I don't have access to the 'professional' area either.
Stay around; you may help the forum to continue to develop in ways that are helpful and supportive to all.

Re: Left This Forum because Its Not Open
Actually this is a good time to discuss this. Initially the optom area was mooted to try and encourage optometrists to talk to each other. As there wasn't a site with an associated forum where optoms could chat amongst themselves, this forum offered space for one. It was so long ago I can't even remember why it was closed to non optoms. I think one reason was precisely because this is a forum for people with KC and not people treating it and the optom forum was a bit of an add on. However, it simply didn't take off.
However, I have no objection at all (as moderator of the forum) for it being thrown open, in fact I would welcome it if it would encourage more people to post! Optoms joining ask for access to the forum then don't post when they see how moribund it is!! As Gareth says, its sort of a non-issue so it remains sitting there!
So I am happy for any suggestions as to what should be done with it! (I would also say house, that its a bit premature to say you are leaving because of a situation that you gave no-one chance to discuss or rectify!) I do think more optoms would engage in discussion if they had some stimulus from people with KC.

I agree with House.
And the thing is there was no discussion about it, and when others too asked about this kind of "you must not see this or say that" it was just bushed off as "there is nothing going on in that section anyway" - to follow the recommendation to set up a section for one set of individuals from a very few persons involved with that decision is just foolish, its like a section for "patients only" - did anyone suggect that ? and why would we ?
Its like the "let off steam" section, what constitutes that ? is everyone who posts there considered as "letting of steam" may be they have valued points which are not being addressed in the real world by those who should be. The reason we are here is there is a problem which needs to be straightened out, thats why there is the "self help and support group" tag going on.

To be be honest I dont feel comfortable posting about my experiences
with Optoms, how the forum is established at the moment.
I feel I should be able to post about optoms positive or negative
and if there's an open area for optoms to post in, then people
should be able to read it.
Alot of the all above, is easly sorted out and makes the forum
even better for people with Kertoconus
Please lets open up!! and share everything on an equal footing.

Re: Left This Forum because Its Not Open
I was under the impression that the Optoms area was designed for optometrists to ask q's about dealing with KC patients they were having difficulty with.I understand the reason for making it private was to save embarrasment for those who might be inexperienced in KC.This would enable them to ask questions in a different enviroment without fear of being ridiculed. It would have ben great if it had become an online centre of excellence for sharing ideas on the subject of KC Having said that it doesnt appear to have worked and for that reason should perhaps be closed down or modified.
As mentioned earlier I would guess the Let of Steam section should be used for any negative experiences on the subject of KC.
Overall this sight is generally very supportive of individuals who have KC.I am not sure much would be gained from posting "optom stories" other than proving what we already know that not all optometrists have a great knowledge of dealing with KC. In my opinion this could well have a negative effect and might make some optometrists less likely to take on KC patients.

Now this is the problem........... the Keratoconus person comes first.
The Keratoconus person may want to share there experinces with fellow sufferers and to pass on valuable
experinces regardless of the sbject. We have the right to tell our own experinces.
Optoms the Keratoconus sufferer comes first not you
there is a conflict of interests here
you need to put Keratoconus person first.
if the above post is correct........ the out come is segregation and we carnt share our experinces or pass on help to each other
this is totally wrong, because your wanting to control free speech and the experinces of the person with Keratoconus
Then>
not all optometrists have a great knowledge of dealing with KC.
need this out in open to tackle this issue!! if its in public domain then we can deal with it!
