A solution for KC contact lens wearers with dry eyes?

Postby Steven Williams » Thu 27 Mar 2008 12:02 am

i have a consultation with Mr Brahma at MREH later today to discuss future options as i'm still experiencing discomfort with rgps.

One of the solutions suggested by Cindy Tromans has been the blocking of the drain off duct in the eye lid for tears to create a more lubricated environment as she has diagnosed that i have dry eyes.

Has anyone had this operation performed? how successful was it? were there any negative effects?

Steven

It is good to see you again.

Actually the Scottish Group had a guest speaker (an optometrist) who had been through this procedure and who spoke very encouragingly about it. I am sorry that I do not have any more direct experience to share.

All the best

i had these plugs put in a few years back. it was done in the opthalmologists chair and was totally painfree and not very stressful even- just a little ticklish. he first put temporary ones in to see if there was a reaction. then followed up a week or 2 later with 'permanant' ones.i am not sure how successful they were- it wasnt a drastic difference but no harmful effects so i would do it again- they seem to have dissolved now. it is basically a tiny piece of silicone.

I also take Flaxseed oil capsules which i believe help (although i can't really prove it). they are not very expensive and are also good for you skin and hair.

Thanx for the feedback folks. "Flaxseed oil" as I'm a believer in alternative/complimentary natural medicine/health I'll check that out and maybe give it a try Melissa.

Sadly its been another frustrating "KFC" day for me today :x :x . I rang the MREH Ophthalmic Dept before setting off on my 2 hour journey. They confirmed the appointment but when i asked for confirmation that it was with Mr Brahma, the Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon (as arranged by Dr Cindy Tromans, my NHS consultant optometrist) I was informed that he was off sick.

So its cost me a days holiday and nothing gained!! :x

The receptionship was very helpful and sympathetic and rearranged the appointment for next week with Mr Brahma :D

As well as prescribing artificial tear solutions supplied by the pharma industry (liquifilm tears preservative free, viscotears, lacrilube nocte) which cost me over £20 in her letter dated 10/12/ to Mr Brahma, Dr Tromans has diagnosis is "bilateral KC and moderate dry eye" and staes that "he may benefit from punctal occlusion. In view of his reduced contact lens wear and difficulty tolerating the lenses he may also benefit from an opinion of surgical treatments"

I'll keep you posted but any further information on punctal occlusion would be appreciated.

Punctal occlusion is the very procedure you posted about above.
