Treatment for astigmatism

Postby dplees » Sat 06 Oct 2007 10:58 am

Hi,

This morning i had an eye test and was told by the optician that the reason for my blurry vision (even with glasses) was astigmatism - rather than Kerataconus which has been treated with intacs.

My prescription is sph 0.5 cyl3.75 and axis 75.

Is there any treatment that I can have for my astigmatism? The intacs have only reduced it by .25.

I think i have read previously that diamond microsegery could possibly help and also prk - not sure about c3-r

I am desperate at the moment as ive just started a new job
Many thanks

Hi Dplees
I suspect it depends on what sort of astigmatism you have. Lots of people who don't have KC have regular astigmatism, which can usually be corrected with glasses. KC eyes have irregular astigmatism as well, which is why our vision can be so distorted. Others who have had Intacs fitted can probably tell you more, but I wonder if the Intacs haven't got rid of the irregular astigmatism and hence your blurry vision?

I have an astigmatism in each eye. the right one is correctable by some prism in my spec lens, and this gives me good sight.

They expect that when the sutures are removed from my left eye the astigmatism there will be too great for specs, so that I'll need lenses.

I know this is not a current solution but one to look forward to.

The new type of soft lens I was trying today worked really well in both eyes and got 6/6 with soft lenses, RGP's give me 6/5. The other more radical soft lens design still has issues to be resolved in my right eye, but for my left I again got a good 6/6.

May be if my eyes were not getting tierd from having the lenses in and out and the fact I am still getting over a cold the 6/5 I get with RGP's may have been achieved. Never used the RGP's so no idea what I would have got with those today.

One of the goals is to have a soft lens that compensates for the irregular astigmatism like the RGP's do by allowing tears to fill the gap. The soft will do the same, but I have no idea how this is achieved, I just provide the yes to be experimented on
