If you're getting the spectrum because your cornea is waterlogged, take out your contact lens, and dont' put it back in until at least an hour or two after vision returns to normal.
If you're getting the effect on a regular basis, make sure that you tell your optometrist/consultant.

Haydn,
There is only one way to combat the water logging and that is to remove the lenses as soon as it starts. It goes quicker and is less stress on the cornea.
When I did this, the halos and thier spectrum would go in about half an hour.
If I wore the lenses for half hour while my corneas were fogged, it would take three hours or more to go!
All lenses you can use protein remover, just make sure it is designed for the type of lens material you have.
I use Bausch & Lomb FizziClean and it works a treat. Best I have found is to go a day without lenses and leave the lenses soaking in the protein remover for the day, rinse it off and clean lenses as normal and store them in the conditioning solution overnight.
Sounds like hassel going without lenses for a day, but a days rest from lens wear can be really beneficial.

Very easy to be honest.
Without lenses I am legally blind in one ey and partially sighted in the other.
At work I have a 19 inch monitor set to high resolution and large font.
The letters are less blocky and easier to see.
Documents get printed on A3 and the hand written stuff I just enlarge up to A3.
I know my way round work without need for lenses but will not go in the lab for obveous safety reasons.
Intially it takes time to get used to, but it is surprising how quick you adapt.
My work pc also has magnification software too to help read things on screen.
The student and employer leaflets are really useful.
KC group publications
Whne I was at uni, I recorded all lectures and wrote them up at my leisure and my tutors provided printed handouts of their overheads and if they forgot and drew things on the board they went and copied the diagram for me.
This was all before the disability discrimination act so it is easer to get help now because they are obliged to support us.
