Astigmatism post-graft

Postby craigthornton » Wed 03 Jan 2007 9:46 pm

Am I right in thinking that the astigmatism after a graft changes over the coming months (for the better) as the new cornea heals and moulds to the eye? And that you it then settles and is corrected by removing some stitches and/or wearing rigid lenses or glasses?

It could be better or worse.....

The cornea will settle down as the swelling reduces over the pending 3 months...once thats less, sutures are one way of manipulating the cornea structure...

If worse, presumably you can wear a RGP lens like before?

All depends how worse, if its that bad then a Scleral could help.....if not an RGP or even a soft lens would work..

in my experience post graft my astigmatism is far worse than it was pre graft i just have to get on with it though as i cant tolerate contact lenses in my eyes i have tried before and no matter what i tried it just wouldnt accept the lenses in my eyes.

after a whilst you begin to adjust to the issues it causes and kind of get used to it.

all the best keep us posted

james

Craig

You have guessed that the question is like "how long is a piece of string".

Your ophthalmologist would not operate if he was not sure he could give you an improved result over what you had before. They try to controil the way in which the post graft astigmatism settles by carefully removing sutures over a period of time.

All the best

Andrew

I also have to remember how lucky I am to have such good vision in my left eye!

Although the astigmatism in my right eye is clearer than before, it is less frustating as it is just in one field of the 360 degrees. Before it was all over the place. And this is barely two weeks after the op.

No, I'm going to be optimistic for the next year. Just had a few down days but now its onwards and upwards.

During both my grafts the consultant set post op healing is a case of 'chase the astigmatism' which is why bay in 1989 I had many stitches when a single one was still the norm!

This meant that with regular check ups he could selectivly remove stitches to keep the astigmatism as low as possible.

There were occasions when a stitch was removed with a marked improvement only to find at the next consultation things were much worse. End result was that after 2 years did not need any vision correction for about the next five years :D
