Hi

I have had a scleral lens for a few months now. I have been using a tissue to dry my lens before storage but I can see fibres left behind on the lens afterwards. Is there anyway to avoid this? Is it possible to just air dry the lens after cleaning?

Many Thanks

Hi AS,

I too was told to use a tissue to dry my scleral lenses.

I'm not sure that tissue fibres left on the lens are really too much of an issue, as the lens is thoroughly cleaned before insertion, so any remaining fibres should be washed away.

The problem with air-drying is that it is uneven, and deposits build up on the surface. Of course, they too will be cleaned away, so maybe that's an option.

My opinion though is that as Moorfields told me to use a tissue, that's what I did.

Hope this helps,
John

Hi John,

Many Thanks for your reply.

Am I meant to be cleaning my lens before insertion? I have been cleaning it when I take it out. Then in the morning I just fill it with some amidose and pop the lens in, although it is never that simple.

As you mentioned in your post I was also told by Moorfields to dry my lens with a tissue. However I can't remember when they said to clean it. I may have just assumed since I have been cleaning all my previous lenses at night that I should continue to do so. Should I be cleaning my lens at night and again in the morning? However that sounds like a lot of effort :D .

Many Thanks

I clean my sclerals with Quattro, rinsed off with tap water at night and dried with a tissue, in the morning I clean them with Boston cleaner, rinse with tap water and saline before using amidose or saline for insertion. The instructions I received with them told me to rinse them off with tap water.

I find that saline doesn't rinse the Boston off very well and it stings if you get it in your eye.

Happy New Year to all.

Lesley.

I was told to clean them using a RGP cleaner and leave to air dry......

I was told to use unscented tissue to dry my scleral. Is it possible that there is a variation in the quality of tissues available on the market? some may be more prone to shet fibres than others.

I don't wear sclerals, but when I used to have glasses I noticed differences in the tissues.

Here in Australia some of the cheaper ones actually left less fibres than the expensive brands.. so I think just experiment with it and see what works best.
