hello iam 22 years old.i was diagnosed with KC 2 years ago.i have been used hard contact lenses for nearly 6 months but i can't tolerate them.i suffered from tearing and burning sensation.it looks like a soap is introduced inside my eyes.so i want to know what is meant by softperms?can they work for my KC instead hard contact lenses? thank you.

Hi Eman,

A soft perm lens is a RGP lens which has a soft 'skirt' round the edge to make the comfort of blinking better.

There is also 'piggy back lenses' which is where you wear an RGP lens over a soft lens which acts as a cushion between the cornea and the hard lens.

What I neglected to mention on your other post, there is a soft lens called 'Kerasoft' which is used in milder cases of KC. To be honest only the optom and yourself will be in a position to say if your KC is mild or severe. However they should be able to say if Kerasoft lenses might be of help.

Where do Rose - K lenses fit in?

Rose K are a type of RGP lens, but you can get them with the soft skirt on too.

Rose K is a type of lens that tries to match the back surface of the lens to the KC cone to reduce the tear void you get with a normal toric lens.

The smaller the void, the smaller the level of ghosting that some KC suffers experience whent hey get lenses.

The second thing is that the level of comfort by having a better lens fit is far better.

That is the theory of it anyway.

The point you need to understand in this is that every KC patient is different. The good thing is that there is a huge variety of lens types available, so that a skilled and experienced optometrist is able to select the most effective and comfortable lens for each patient.

This comes, I am afraid, with a health warning. Not all high street optometrists are particularly good at fitting KC eyes.
