To all those in Wales! ('A & E' Departments)

Postby Sweet » Sun 09 Apr 2006 6:35 pm

Hi there!

I have just returned from a week home in Pontypridd, 12 miles from Cardiff and was just wondering how you all find the 'A & E' departments there? Not having had surgery when i was in Wales and now being in London for almost two years i'm so used to going to Moorfields. I was just wondering where you all go if you have an emergency eye problem?

Do you head to the Heath hospital in Cardiff (University hospital of Wales) as that is where most of the optometrists are based? I know that my old consultant was from the Royal Glamorgan hospital in Llantrisant but they don't have an emergency eye department so i wouldn't have really been too sure where to head if i had a problem with a stitch last week. Someone has mentioned that the hospital sends you to Bristol?! But surely there must be somewhere nearer than that!

Just wondering for the next time i head home as i have only ever used an 'A & E' dept at home for conjunctivitis so maybe a loose stitch would be a lot more trouble! Also if there isn't a dedicated eye department do you get the care you need, or are you having to explain KC and grafts to junior house officers?! And are all grafts done in Cardiff? Just curious!! As while i enjoy living in London sometimes i find myself really missing the green, green grass of home, and am thinking that i won't be staying here forever!

Hehe on a weather note as welsh people know all about the rain ... it's wet and windy today in London as well!!

Thanks for any replies!

Well Sweet it's not just the KC we have in common.

My family all come from Ponty too what a coincidence.

I still have lots of family over there, Uncles, Aunties, Cousins and the like.

My Grandma used to live on Lan Park Road, my other Granddad in Treforest, my uncle is up at the Common and another somewhere up Graigwen Hill.

Tis a small world as they say.

Actually now I think of it, one of my cousins is an Optician in Ponty. His name is Soulsby.

Know him??

Sweet,

I have been told if I go to my locala A&E in Rugby if it is outside the eye units hours in Coventry.

The optom on call there would be called over or I would be transfered to Coventry to meet him.

So far all occurnaces needed eye A&E have been during office hours so I just hop on the bus.

Ohhh yea i remember now!! LOL!!! Sorry!

I was taking some time out then and forgot all about it!

Ok i am orginally from Cwmbach Aberdare where there is a HUGE clan of Sweets but my parents moved back to Ponty as that was where my mum was from.

I still keep in touch with a lot of friends from the area as my dad still lives near there. I had one optician in Ponty though can't remember his name! To be honest he was pretty useless really which is why i don't really remember him, as the more questions i ased the more he ignored me!! So maybe that is why i now won't shut up! LOL!!

After seeing him and not being happy i wandered over a few valleys and visited a very nice optom in Llantrisant who later retired so i headed to Cardiff as most of the good optoms with KC experience set up there as they get direct referrals from the Heath hospital.

I still keep in touch with my old optom from Cardiff and my old consultant who give really good advice to me. They are very much influenced by London so it kinda works both ways to keep in touch!

It is nice to go home, but everytime i go back i suddenly realise what a small valley Ponty is and indeed how you can't really get anywhere unless you drive!

Oh just to add on rereading your post, my gran lived in the very first house on the common and my brother and i played hell with the traffic as we used to go-karting down there with his friends! LOL! The things we remember!!

Ok ... hope that is better! LOL!! :P

Well funnily enough now I think about it, I think there are some Sweets in my family...somewhere.

I'll have to ask my parents. You know what Wales is like though...all sorts of Aunts and Uncles and most of them are just family friends.

As for Ponty..yup small and somewhat depressing....sorry Ponty!

Yes i think that most of the people in Wales are related at some point! LOL!! Ponty is a depressing place but it holds loads of memories, and Tom Jones did preform at Ynysangharad park not so long back to an astonishing number of people though i can't remember the figures! But it surprised us all as to how many people he got in there!!
