Hello everyone went to have a consultation for laser eye surgery and then walked out being referred for keratoconus. I am 35 been wearing specs for about 20 years and I didn't realise anything was wrong . Gotta be honest I am a bit scared for the future and wondered what happens next. I guess wait for my nhs consultation until then I'm gonna worry myself stupid.

Hi Scott

Most people that I have spoken to that are in your position get KC diagnosedas being very mild, cope very well in glasses or daily disposable contact lenses for high astigmatism and reffered back their high street optomotrist with an advisory to refer back to the hospital if vision deteriorates. The older we get the stiffer our corneas get so reducing the chances of KC progressing so as you are in specs and your mid 30's it seems that most people diagnosed don't progress much further.

Better to catch it now than have laser surgery and make things worse. I have also met many people who had the laser surgery to find a few years later that they have developed KC and because the cornea has thinned their vision has got far worse and rather than having the option of glasses now have the only option of wearing contact lenses to be able to see. Without contact lenses they are functionally blind!
