hand hygenie and lens fittings - experiences?

Postby space_cadet » Sun 20 Sep 2009 9:05 pm

was chatting to my cousin earlier who is a doctor in London, one of my lil cousins is in and out of eye clinics as his vision is crud, she was asking me what hand hygine of staff up here is, as she was at a appointment with my lil cousin a while back and watched him be tested well they tried to without a single handwash, she was going mad at them as they should know better.

At my 1st lens fitting last week, one of the staff tried to do a lowsy hand hygine routeen till I pointed out 'that lens isn't coming near my eye till your hands are in gear' when she went to ask a 2nd oppionion on each fit it was clear her collegues are on the ball and she is clueless, praying I don't have her for my fitting on friday this week as I wont be happy!

2 well ok friday will be the 3rd lot of lenses that they are trying. Heyho. Here is to pray they don't loose one in a eye again as that was awful and the pain left me in agony for hte rest of the day and preventing me from being at a meeting that evening, I had to sleep it off as yowch that was sore :(

I have never had a hospital or private sector optometrist who was not scrupulous about hand hygiene. I thought it was standard practice for them, not only to wash their hands but also to be seen to wash them between patients AND after touching any of their toys!

must admit whenever i am having a contact lens fitting or similar the fitter is meticulous at washing her hands each and every time - she apologises that it takes a long time to get a lens that is hurting my eyes out due to having to wash her hands, sometimes i would rather she just gets the lens out when that happens. General check ups (not actually going near my eyes with hands) they dont bother so much. They do however clean/wipe down any equipment that my face is going near/on in front of me.
