How is a new lens implanted during a cataract op?

Postby craigthornton » Mon 20 Aug 2007 2:30 pm

If you've seen my other post, you'll know that a few weeks ago I punched myself hard enough to knock out my lens, and so after my cornea heals I will be having an artificial lens implanted.

I wondered how the lens is actually held in place because, with a natural lens, you have tiny "guy wires" in laymans terms in your eye which hold the lens in place.

How is this achieved with an atificial lens?

Is it true that the op is straightforward? I struggle to look in certain directions when being examined now, so dread the thought of having to concentrate on looking in one direction for 15-20 mins!

Craig
It's a piece of cake - honest! :o

The natural lens is held in a lens capsule (it's got a proper name but don't know what the technical term is) and before they go ahead with the op they will examine your eye in some detail and take fine precision measurements to ensure the right size lens is inserted. (I gather they do get this wrong very very occasionally which means the lens can move VERY slightly but I really wouldn't worry about that - it is very rare. )
My cataract op only took 12 minutes - and your eye along with the muscles around it are anaesthetised so much you will find that you simply don't move it! All you can see is a very bright light. I was absolutely worried sick about having mine done, but now I wouldn't hesitate to get the other one done if it would cure my problems (which it won't 'cos we now know it isn't the cataract causing them!)

If you want to know any more of the detail please feel free to PM me - only too happy to share my experiences! And honestly - it really isn't too bad. I have had far worse dental treatment!!

I habve nothing to add to Pat's excellent post. My only additional comment would be Don't Panic.

:D
