Went to the optometrist today for my annual check up. Grafts look great, 1 stitch in right eye, 2 in Left, those stitches are nearly 12 years old. Glasses script still the same. All cool.
My optic nerves however have a deeper cup than normal. Apparently this can be a sign of glaucoma, so now I need to be monitored for that.
Now steriod use can cause glaucoma, that is fine, and to be honest without my grafts I would not be seeing well now, so I am no worse off even if I do develop glaucoma, so I am not complaining, just a little shell shocked.
I have been reading about it today and I found it interesting that thinner corneas are also a predisposing factor in glaucoma, along with eye injury, steriods, increased intra ocular pressure and of course age. I also had always assumed that glaucoma was raised intra ocular pressure, but it is infact dammage to the optic nerve, generally caused by high intra ocular pressure, but not always, and you can have normal eye pressure and glaucoma.
I guess I am just saying that with the hell our eyes are put through, it is another thing we should check regularly.

Pru,
Sorry things did not go quite as planned.
From our confrence we were reminded to get a full eye health check regular rather than just go to the contact lens clinic. This is to make sure nothing is missed.
I am lucky as the optom always does a thorough check like the one you seem to of had.
