Help for students with a disability - petition

Postby Anne Klepacz » Fri 13 Jun 2014 1:09 pm

I've often posted that universities are pretty good these days about providing additional help for students with a health problem or disability. However, the funding for this help now seems to be under threat. So whether you are a student or not, please help other KC-ers by signing this petition.

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

Is not just for university students but for anyone engaged in post 16 education, be it college or university.

DSA can and does help many with a variety of needs, DSA pays for note takers, computer equipment, personal assistants, travel expenses, learning support mentors, proof reading of essays, photocopying, exam provision n much more.

When I was at uni I was fortunate to have DSA without it my undergrate degree would not have occured, an average uni day would be (remember I have KC n other difficulties too)

wake up, have a phone call from my note taker who was also a mentor, (he was awesome n Matt I know you wont be reading this but I am forever in your debt) the phone call would be to make me get up and out the house and in a cab I got to uni n the prearranged meeting place where I met Matt, who had a cuppa for me, then off to lecture or seminar, he would take notes for me in a format which worked for me, and always emailed them by the end of that day

if n when i had essays to write we would meet up n work on them together,

DSA is a vital life line to many students with a multitude of needs, wtihout DSA and its provisions many would be unable to attend letures due to anxiety or see materials given in the standard format, DSA pays for lecturers to produce handouts in a format that works fo the student

I was disabled students officer both at my university and nationally for a couple of years

so please do sign the petition to ensure others arent cut out of their education
