UPDATE
OK, the forum is temporarily back now, in a downgraded home, so it will be slower than before, and subject to slowdowns from time to time.
But at least it's back.
The only trouble with the restarting was with non-english characters - some of these appear to have been "altered" by the recovery process, but in the spirit of returning the forum to use, I've decided to allow them to remain so, rather than leave the forum down for another week.
Once the original server (which is now dead meat) is rebuilt, the site will return home, with another small (hopefully less than a day's) outage - but this will be publicised in advance.

It really is good tos ee the forum back, even if just for a little while. all the best when you come to restore the full service, John.
What is all this about servers and fridges? I keep my milk (and eye drops)* in the fridge and my computer in my study; should I swap them round?
Andrew
*try keeping eye drops in the fridge: when they go into your eye, it is better than chocolate
pps, John: I went into my profile and retyped Évêque. On my computer it is back to normal.

Andrew,
Computers generate heat. Lots of it. Only problem is that they don't like it at all. Hence when you put lots of computers together (in a "Data Centre") the room gets uncomfortably hot for both humans and their electronic slaves.
Just like humans, when a PC overheats, it stops working, so data centres tend to have excessive amounts of air-conditioning.
As Jay points out, the machine you're working on always seems to be in the coldest spot... unfortunately, that wasn't the case with "ace"; it overheated and died. We're temporarily running on "romana" at my house, and will eventually be stable (hopefully) with "jo".

John,
I don't know if it is of use but I have the forum to be faster following the 'downgrade' rather than slower.
Ed
PS. I used to hang an older winter jacket on the door of our server room if I ever had to do more than a few minutes work in there!

Somebody complimented me on my driving yesterday - they left a note on my windscreen "Parking Fine" which was nice.
KC managed with softperm lens in left eye, Intacs (2/11/07) in right eye
