New to Kerataconus

New to Kerataconus - Hi ive had KC for about 6/7 months, I have just been using glasses at the moment. I work in a call centre and eyes start blurring, eyes start hurting after using vdu, also night time driving is a bit tricky does anyone have the same problem.

Also i am awaiting contact lens do they actually work will they help me, what type is the best to use Thanks

Hi rash123, a welcome from me.
Contact lenses should make things better for you.
There is not a best type of lenses, it is up to your eyes, your optometrist should know better.
I would suggest silicon hydrogel based lenses like the kerasoft3.
If you have intense problems with night driving, consider buying izon lenses for your glasses.
Finally, if you see that your situation gets worse (your doctor will tell that after one,two,...n years), then I would suggest considering the cxl procedure.

Welcome to the forum. I guess we are all sorry that you are having such a difficult time with your keratoconus.

Most people with KC manage very well with contact lenses, and are able to live their whole lives with no other intervention. When your lenses arrive, do not be tempted to exceed the daily wear time that your fitter advises. It will take you time to build up to a useful wear time each day, but the reward will be well worth the effort.

In the unlikely event that your lenses do not make the difference for which you hope, do not give up. There are many styles of contact lens and many different materials. Most fitters will try first with the most commonly worn varieties and then, if they fail, try others until they get the package right.

Hi Rash123

I used to work in a call centre and suffered the same problem with the screen. In the end I had a desk assessment arranged through the Job Centre with Access Made Easy and Access to Work where they suggested screen enlarging software called Lunar and I had a 24" monitor. Both these helped me a lot and as it is through the Job Centre they foot most of the bill and your company pays just the first £300 (ish). The good thing is as well is that if you move jobs your equipment moves with you.

As for driving, I am not legal to drive but as a passenger I know how much it hurts my eyes!!

Notify your occupational health department and get your VDU assesment re-done, working in a call center you should have these done every year or two anyway.

Get the whole environemnt assessed, so lighting, aircon, software used and so on. Many assesors only do half the job an look only at the seat, keyboard and display, forgetting about the rest of the stuff they should check.

bit of a silly question but can wearing contact lens make it worse, im so reluctant wearing them i find it hard touching my eye without blinking furiously so i dont know how contact lens are going to be put on

You exactly describe my own approach to my first contact lens appointment years ago. But, with patience on the part of the fitter, I managed to wear contact lenses with great comfort for three decades.

The time did come when I needed grafts, but I was able to postpone that date by the use of contact lenses.
