Techniques for removing RGP lenses?

hey there,

seem to be having some trouble getting my contact out at the end of the day and cause quite some pain pushin it about the surface of my eye tryin to get it out...

what techniques do you use? and which is the quickest and easiest?

Hi Adam

I usually hold the case under my eye and pull both eye lids to the side, it usually pops right out into the case apart from the odd time i am on my knees for an hour hunting for it.

Like pete I used the 'blink'.

Get a large cloth onto which your lens will fall. Spread cloth onto a table top (or even into the cavity of an upturned hat). Look directly down at the cloth.

Draw back the outer corner of your eye.

Blink

The lens should pop out onto the cloth.

If that does not work (and if the lens has moved, it probably won't), find the lens and using the most convenient eyelid press down on the rim. Use the other eyelid to slide under the lens and it will come out. If a vacuum has formed under the lens it may be helpful to release the 'seal' by pressing gently on the white of your eye right beside the lens. this ought to release the vacuum and make it easy to take out the lens.

I use the same technique as Pete and Andrew. Sometimes the lens doesn't want to come out because the eye has dried out and the lens seems 'stuck' to the cornea. Using lubricating drops to moisten the eye can help to 'unstick' it and it'll then pop out more easily.

....and if that fails - get yourself a little plunger. Worked a treat for me when I was (trying) to wear RGP's. And stopped me from panicking knowing I had that as afall back position.

I'd just like to add to Andrew's post:

"FOCUS ON THE TIP OF YOUR NOSE" just before you blink.

It helps to keep the lens at the place where a blink woudl be useful.

Hi all,

Read this with interest as this is what people keep telling me to do, but I just can't do it and I really have tried!

I'm not sure how to explain my 'method' but I seem to 'pick' the lens off the eye by literally putting two fingers around it. Always comes out straight away and don't have the hassle of trying to find it on the floor, but I have to say that a couple of people have questionned my method and suggested it may not be beneficial to my eyes??

I tried for months with the whole blinking method. after two trips to A and E at 2 am i gave up with blinking. The best thing for me is my plunger, simply squeeze it, put it on top of the lens, release pressure and take it off your eye.

I never felt fully in control when using th blinking method, maybe this is why I could never master it, but i feel totally in control of what's going on with my plunger. Admittedly it's a bit daunting sticking a mini plunger on your eye, but it's not so bad!

I agree with Craig, i use my plunger, the blinking method worked fine too but the plunger is so much easier, it works every time with very little hassle and all you fell is very liitle pressure when attaching to the lens, give it a go as it sounds like its just what you need
