Best monitor for windows user

Hi, first post
Trying to get advice on best quality monitor which could help with my vision.
Can't tolerate contact lenses due to allergies and general inflamation underneath eyelids. With Spectacles I get 6/6 vision but its not sharp and crisp like contact lenses. Vision becomes dull, colours become less rich and the edges of text become more fuzzy.
My spectacles prescription is very strong which makes near vision a little more difficult when using a computer all day long at work.
I have increased the DPI setting on my windows XP laptop which also has a separate 21" screen (4:3 ratio) via the DVI cable. This has helped to make the text larger and easier to read. It generally works but not on all applications.
Looking for advice on which best monitor to buy, maybe something larger such as 24" widescreen so I can fit more text on the pager without having to use scroll bars.
Background
Age 41, diagnosed with KC at 20.
Left eye - Astigmatism is -10
Right eye - uses balance lens on spectacles. Still recovering from corneal transplant 18 months ago.
Use contact lens in one eye only for night vision driving. Wow what a difference it makes.
If anybody could help with screen choice - that would be great? Note, my Dell laptop is work provided so can't change this myself. However it could be upgraded to a Lenovo Thinkpad in the current rollout of laptop upgrades which has a HDMI port if that would help.
Thanks
Raj Gill
