Hi all,

Just wondering what your views are on swimming with contact lenses? I wear scleral lenses and goggles everytime i go swimming. You may be aware of a recent story of a girl who contracted acanthamoeba keratitis in her eye after swimming with monthly lenses.

I am a keen sports enthusiast and would hate to give up swimming for fear of something that may never happen.....im in no way a hypochondriac but thought i would ask you opinions first!

I am unable to wear glasses so sclerals are my only source of vision. I also have a 10 year old graft in my right eye and hydrops in the left!

Many thanks in advance :)

sarah

Should be fine as you are wearing goggles, which is recommended if swimming with lenses in. RGPs also have a tendency to float off the cornea, but sclerals shouldn't have that problem!!

Maybe give them a good clean straight after you finish swimming to be safe.

I bought a water tight swimming mask which I wear for swimming. Still always keep my face out the water though just to be on the safe side!
