Spectacle Blur

Hello lovelies!!

Many thanks for the information leaflet recently sent to me

I have been diagnosed with KC now for 1 year. Last October before wearing RGP s my left eye was -4.50 and right -8.75. I have had another eye test today and my left is now -3.50 and right is -9.50. I was quite surprised with the left eye becoming more long sighted, but the optom said KC fluctuates.

My question is, I was looking forward to this refraction as I handn't worn RGPs on my last eye test, and was keen to eliminate spectacle blur

I wore them as much as possible this morning then took them out right before my eye test, as this is what it will be like when I wear my glasses, after a day of wearing RGP s. The optom told me not to do this, and to not wear my RGP s for 24 hours before having an eye test! Is this correct?

Jay,

It depends on when you want to wear your glasses. Leaving your lenses out for 24 hours is probably best if you want to wear lenses one day and contact lenses the next.

I tend to wear my glasses when I first get up in the morning and put my lenses in just before I leave for work. So my glasses need to be set up for my morning vision - so when I go to the opticians I book an early morning appointment and leave my lenses out until after the appointment. There are others who mainly wear their glasses in the evening and they book a late afternoon appointment and take their lenses out the opticians.

Which contact lenses are you using? Spectacle blur is likely to be greater with RGPs than soft lenses. It can take weeks for the cornea to demould after RGPs so you are unlikely to get an optimum glasses prescription without leaving your lenses out for a couple of weeks - and then of course the prescription would not be optimised for your eyes after you've worn RGPs again!

So I would suggest that you explain to the optician when you when want to wear the glasses and then ask what they recommend.

Ahh ok, I do wear my glasses usually in the evenings only for watching tv etc. I was trying to wear my lenses as much as possible before the appt to replicate what it's like when I take my lenses out in the evening. I''ll try and book a late appt next year lol . I have RGPs, they seem to be well fitting so I don't get much blur currently. Hopefully I wore them enough this morning to replicate what it's like after wearing them all day.

I was a bit embarrrased at the opticians too, as the lady was typing in my order, and it rejected it as the power was too high and out of range! She had to phone through and check.

Do you guys have any problems ordering high power glasses on the high street?

The main problem is that high power lenses need to be in small frames with a high index lenses to reduce edge thickness. So there are a limited number of frames to choose from.

I was once rang up by the opticians to come back an choose another pair as the lenses were so thick at the edges the arms of the glasses wouldn't be able to close!

I would add that it is worth having a pair of back up glasses - for years I was under the impression that glasses would be of no use to me. OK they are not good enough to drive in but with them I can recognise some one the other side of the room which I can't do unaided.

Thanks, that's good to know. I always choose thick black clark kent frames, so the lenses dont look too big!
