Can Boston Scleral Contact Lenses be claimed on Insurance?

Hi folks,
My doctor has recently advised that I switch to using Boston Scleral lenses as my cornea has become slightly thinner, I have an opacity developing and my KC is too advanced for an RGP to be easily fitted.
I am currently working abroad and there's no chance I'll be able to get this done at home. Would anyone know if Boston lenses can be claimed on Aviva Insurance? They're going to cost almost 2000 pounds, so a little help from Aviva would go a long way.
Cheers,
Kameel

Hi Kameel and welcome to the forum,
I don't know the answer to your question, but I guess the way to find out is to ask them! A letter from your doctor with his recommendation would presumably be useful.
Good luck
Anne

I guess the answer to your question would depend on the risks covered by your policy. I know that sounds like an evasion, but health insurance polices can vary so much, even within the policies issued by an individual company. You would need to look at the inclusions and the exclusions on your policy.
Alternatively, you could submit a claim and see what happens.
Every good wish.

Hi there Kameel
Can probably tell you whether the policy will cover you with a bit more infomation, although as Andrew rightly says, making a claim with your provider will give you a simple and definitive answer ! Aviva has a claims assistance service which will be given on the policy documentation (or their website will have the number if you've not got your policy details to hand). They're there to help policy holders and are happy to answer any questions -- just like yours.
But if not, could you tell me:
1) Whether the policy you're wanting to claim under is a health or travel policy i.e. did you take it out to primarily cover medical treatment costs or did you take it out to provide insurance for costs arising from a trip abroad which might include medical but also lost luggage etc. ?
2) Did you advise the insurer that you had Keratoconus as a pre-exisitng condition ?
3) Did you advise the instuer that you would be working abroad and request a policy that specifically covered compensated employment rather than leisure travel ?
4) Did you purchase the policy yourself "over the counter" i.e. through a broker or direct from the provider or is the policy provided for you by another party e.g. an employer or educational instituaiton etc. ?
Best wishes
Chris
