Eye Drops

Postby GrandPaClanger » Wed 07 Jul 2010 4:38 pm

Hi All

After a 8 or 9 week wait I finally got to see the people who count at the hospital. Some new RGP have been ordered as they think the fit can be improved over the existing lenses that I had prescribed privately. Must admit being at the hospital it was interesting that they were able to go to a cupboard and pull out different lenses to try. Managed to get an improvement in vision as well which was a bonus. After the contact fitting it was off to see the consultant about the severe pain in my right eye due to the raised scarring. He said that " with advance KC the surface of my eye is breaking down at night causing friction with the lens". Now I have not done any research yet but I assume that your tears form a protective barrier and that’s what he is talking about. If anyone can shed any light it would be appreciated. I must say everything seemed rushed. Having said that watching the contact lens fitter zipping about with the slit lamp and pulling all these lenses actually filled me with confidence. It would have just been nice to not felt so rushed with the consultant so you had time to gather your thoughts. Appointment in 4 weeks to collect the lenses and look at the fit, then an appointment in October to see the consultant to see how things are going and “discuss other options if things are not going to plan”, ummmm. Overall a positive experience and result. :D :D

He has prescribed Pliva simple eye ointment for me to use at night and Allergan Celluvisc 0.5% w/v (carmellose sodium) eye drops. What’s people’s view on inserting the drops ?. Do you leave the lenses in or take them out. The drops I have been using I leave the lens in. As these come in a single dose. I wonder if it would be better to take the lens out apply a drop or two to the eye and then use some to wet the lens before re inserting. Any advice guys and galls ?

Ian

Forgot to mention they have changed terms now, I have Keratoglobus not KC. Net result is still the same :D . TBH I worked that out from my topography. If you are going to have something might as well make it rare. Not sure if that makes a graft more likely as the thining extends further out. Time will tell i guess. Vision without lenses is 1/20 left and 0.5/20 right

Keratoglobus is a type of Keratoconus where the thinned cornea bulges into a globular shape.

I think I'd take my lenses out before inserting drops.

When I had to use eye drops throughout the day and needed to be able to see straight away, maximum relief came if I tooke my lenses out and put the eye drop in the back of the lens and reinserted the lens in my eye. Putting the drops in my eyes while wearing lenses didn't seem to allow the drops to get fully under the lens.

Thanks both. 3-0 to taking the lenses out then :D . Think I need to see if I can find a cheaper supply though, the Chemist wants £8 odd for 30 doses. Assuming twice a day that two boxes a month

If it is a single use ampoule like the Systane I use, you can reseal them and to save money, I keep them in the fridge sealed container so they are protected from food stuff at home and work. I can get a single amoule to last for 3 days and have been using this method for at least 3 years now with no problems.
