Looking for advice about KC

Hi all,

I recently found out I'm suffering from KC. This only occurred after consulations with Optimax and Ultralase for LASIK/LASEK treatment (Ultralase didn't diagnose me, Optimax did). I've currently had a stable prescription for the last 4 years after a succession of years where I changed my spectacles annually from the age of 15.

I've had a burning desire to ditch my specs for a couple of years now but both consulations have stated that my corneas are too thin to have the LASIK treatment and my corneas are too steep to have the LASEK treatment. The optician at Optimax stated that he was surprised that I've not suffered any deterioration in eyesight (most of my faults appear to be cancelling each other out :) )

I've just sent and enquiry form to Accuvision about C3-R treatment but thought I'd ask regular forumites whether they think this procedure is worthwhile or whether I should thank my lucky stars that I'm not suffering any deterioration (yet).

R.

Rich,

Welcome to the forum.

I wonder whether you have yet been seen by a consultant ophthalmologist? In your place, before I committed myself to doing things to my eyes, I think I'd wait until I had a consultation with an eye doctor . Tell your GP that you have KC (probably sub clinical at this stage and may very well never progress very much beyond the point where special glasses or contact lenses would offer very good corrected vision).

Your GP will refer you to a local ophthalmology unit. If your nearest hospital does not actually have a specialist cornea ophthalmologist, maybe you could ask to a referral to a regional centre where such a specialist is to be found. Once you have had an opportunity to discuss the various options with an objective specialist you can then consider going to the commercial sector to see what they have to offer

Every good wish.

Andrew

Rich,

Hi there and welcome to the site!

I would agree with Andrew here in seeing a KC specialist who can diagnose you properly and talk through your options.

As for the cornea being too thin and steep, I wouldn't be thinking about getting laser treatment done. Most wouldn't do this on people with KC.

I know you are saying that you would like to get rid of your specs, have you tried any contact lenses? There are a lot of different ones to try and everyone is different. What suits one person might not for someone else!

Hoping that you can work something out, let us know how you get on!
