Cataract surgery - Biometry problems

Hello,
I am a keratoconus sufferer and have a dense cataract in my left eye. I was due for cataract surgery at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, but the hospital was unable to get "sensible" biometry readings for me. The machine produced readings that suggested I required a lens of strength -22. The staff seemed to think that they could improve my eyesight by fitting an appropriate lens, but I was expecting to have to continue wearing contact lenses.
My questions are:
Has anyone had any a similar experience?
Also, Is it actually possible to improve the vision by cataract surgery?
Thanks, in anticipation.
Alanh.
