Cooking chips ???

Postby GaryD007 » Thu 25 Jun 2009 4:15 pm

Hello everyone

This may sound strange but I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem. I was diagnosed with KC around 8 years ago and now have to wear RGP lenses to see. Whenever I cook chips my eyes really sting (like when you cut onions). Sounds bizarre I know !!

I also noticed that if I have a slight cut on my hand it also really stings when I peel potatoes so I was wondering if this was an allergic reaction to spuds ?!?!

I'm not surfe if it is an allergic reaction, but I used to get the same thing when cutting potatoes for chips. The problem with cutting potatoes when wearing contact lenses is that you are standing looking into an aerosol of potato juice, and this spray is absorbed into the material of the lens. I don't know what the pH of potato juice is, but I do know that there are chemical properties of this substance that may not be entirely consistent with comfortable lens wear or pain free eyes :D
