Where are the main differences between Jack Allens Flex-Edge and the SynergEyes KC-Lenses?

As far as I can tell both are variations on a theme and would come under the generic term Softperms which have been around for many years. A rigid center made from RGP material that is breathable and corrects the KC like a normal RGP lens with a soft skirt to take the harshness off blinking you sometimes get as the lids ride against the lens edge.

Just like there is more than one manufacture of RoseK lenses there is more than one manufacturer of Softperms, Sklerals, softlenses and so on with each using a slightly differnt lens design to correct for KC. Synergyse appear to match the corneal surface as best they can where Jack Allens to me at least appears to be more like a RoseK with a soft edge.

I have heard that the skirt makes these lens a similar size to soft contact lenses, my RGP's are about half the diamater of my soft K3 lenses.

I dont know the differences between the two types of lenses but i do have the SynergEyes lenses (one KC one normal at the mo, likely to change to both KC variations very soon). my husband wears normal soft contact lenses and there is a difference in size. mine are larger, his end on the coloured part of the eye, whereas mine end once they reach the whites of my eye.

My Kerasoft K3 lenses go onto the white of the eyes and the RGP's don't even cover the coloured part.

Just goes to show the variety of lens sizes depending on our individual need.

i was fitted with synergeyes KC lenses on jan 13. they were good to start with but they have been causing me quite a lot of pain recently, to the extent where i have to let my eyes rest for a couple of days before i can put them back in. i want to keep up with them as i would recommend them in terms of their effectiveness in vision and comfort, but atm i think i need to go back and get them checked as something is not quite right. not heard about the jack allens flex edge, but atm im thinking bout going back to piggy backing rgps, was pretty comfortable

Burntheaction can i ask where/who you were fitted with your synergeyes lenses? and what solution you have been given/recommended to use with them?

I was given a preservative free (react badly to the preservative solutions) solution, was not told to use a protein remover, but had some problems at the end of last year, which means i am not currently wearing my lenses. I have been told some of the problems are likely to have been caused by a protein build up on my lenses and having since read the instructions with my solution it states about using a protein removing solution once a month.
I am due back at the hospital soon with my eyes, when hopefully i will be told i will be able to wear contacts again.
My contact lenses have been sterilised by my dispensing opticians so they should be ok to wear but i need to talk to them about the protein build up on my lenses and if i should be using a protein remover as well.

Most the solutions now state they remove protein build up from the lenses in normal daily cleaning. Perhaps some optoms take it for granted not all of us can tolerate those slutions. Plus from what I have heard on these forums, because people with KC tend to have more sensative eyes, protein builds up quicker than a non KC eye.

My RGP's need to be done monthly, but my Kerasoft K3's have a total of 2 months wear on the left lens, only one month on the right and absolutly no protein problems with those lenses. I think it is because the K3 silicone hydrogel material is very slippery so my eyes react less to them and/or the surface of the lesn is such prtein can not stick to it.

can you use any protein remover solution or do you need specific ones to match our everyday solutions?

For my RGP lenses I used either the Bausch & Lomb or Boots depending which was on offer. Both seemed to work equaly well.

When it comes to lenses with a mixture of materials sus as the soft permsI have no idea but you should be able to call the lens manufacturers for advice or your optometrist.
