Not if its a "complex prescription" you get a voucher if it is, you just pay for the frames you like, and if its NHS ones you like, that's free. By the way I'm no expert on this, ask around different opticians to know more on this topic or someone else may chime in here.

y2k,

The problem with strong prescriptions is that they DO cost more to make - hence the online guys don't do them. They also have to be made really accurately or you suffer blurred vision and headaches etc. This is an unfortunate fact of life! Reason? Well, high prescriptions are not as common as low ones, they often need special thinning to make them look reasonable which in turn means "high index" materials.#

I know that glasses can be expensive, but as Lynn says, this is down to the need to use 'high index' materials for strong lenses. The alternative would be for the specs to look like they had been made from the nether end of a guiness bottle.

I'd generally steer clear of 'on line' dispensaries for glasses or contact lenses. I much appreciate the chance to be with my optometrist when I collect my specs; it gives her a chance to make sure that the frames fit nicely and comfortably, and that the lenses perform as anticipated.
