Intacs pencilled in for the next 2/3 months

Postby alison falshaw » Wed 06 Feb 2008 2:04 pm

Hi Folks,

I havent logged on for a while - my eyes havent been upto sitting in front of a pc!

I am still off work - very bad headaches, especially around the left eye - feels as though there is a weight bearing down on the eye ball. My consultant at James Cook in Mbro doesnt believe that all my pain is due to KC and has suggested that my GP investigates further.

Today I had my appointment with Mr Morgan at Sunderland Eye Infirmary to discuss intacs. My right eye is so far advanced that I have no option but to either have intacs or corneal graft. He told me about intacs and how it is a new procedure in the UK - only approved by NICE lassummer and the expected results. He believes that my right eye could be what is called a lazy eye and that the visual expectations shouldnt fantastic but will be an improvement.

It does scare me that this is a new procedure on the NHS and that only 6 have been performed at this hospital, so I am keen to hear from anyone who has had this procedure either privately or through the nhs and how succesful it was.

Anyway the decision was made to go ahead and to expect a date within the next 2/3 months.
Once the right eye has settled we will go for cross linking in the left - probably will pay for this as funding may not be granted as it hasnt been approved by NICE.

I am quite nervous and anxious but I dont have any choice, either intacs or transplant. Given that intacs is reversible it makes sense to have this in the hope that I may not need a transplant.

I would be pleased to hear any comments - good or bad.

Alison

Alison

I am sorry that your travails continue. Still, at least you now have an idea of when you can look at Intacs. All the best.

And then CXL to follow! This could be your 'turn around' year! Let's hope so.
