new ro KC need a little help

Postby stuart1977 » Mon 03 Dec 2007 8:23 am

hi after quite a few months with irrated eyes, blurry ghosting vision and several headaches I decided to go and get my eyes checked. I was diagnosed with KC. My question is around working and time off. My employers have let me work w]from home as my work is full of flouresent lights (warehouse) which litterky play havoc with my eyes causing me to rub and strain them which i think is casuing the headaches. Also after being under this lighting it makes my vision worse and i can see streaks of light across peoples faces as well as double vision when driving i.e the lines in the road.
I have had contact lens fitted at trial stage and they work perfectly removing all the glare and i can read the charts well. The trouble is now the hospital are dragging their heels with appointments and i have to wait untill the 11th of jan for fitting. I was wondering will my doctor sign me off as i think i will have to provide a sick note now until fitting date or am i being pathetic :?: the problem is if i go back to work i cant see or read from my laptop or projection screens and last week i managed 4 hrs in a meeting then had to come home as i was squinting that badly....thanks for listening and the help

Stuart

Congratulations on finding the forum and welcome to the KC community.

You describe pretty well the visual distortion we get with KC. You are not being pathetic, but your employer is required to make "reasonable adjustments" to your work place to accommodate your KC. You may be able to get a doctor's certificate to carry you to your contact lens fitting; go and see your GP, explain your circumstances and talk things over.

You can download lots of information from this site; it may be that your GP is not entirely au fait with KC and the challenges it carries.

All the best

Andrew

And another welcome. Have you found the KC at Work leaflet which you can download from the home page of this site? That might be useful to give to your employers (though they already sound helpful and sympathetic). And if you (and/or your GP!) would like our basic information booklet about KC, just PM or e-mail me your postal address and I'll pop one in the post to you.
All the best
Anne

Thnaks very much fo the warm welcome and the advice. Im seeing my doctor in the morning so should get sorted.. the main gripes i have found not in the condition as everyone will know what its like but being mis lead and the poor communication of our health service. Ive never used the NHS before and its appaulling. I have one doctor telling me one thing another doctor telling me something else and then a secretary telling me some completely different. I have been promised quick timescales for appointments verbally i then communicate this to work and then in the post my appointment is weeks away. I have to then go back to work and say sorry but..... annoying. This is why I need a sicknote. I was told 2 weeks from trial fittings until i get my real contacts only to get a letter now stating 6 weeks on friday.

Good points that I have is that trial lenses worked and i go see very clearly and I suppose now I have a firm date.
I must have had this condition for years (im 30 now) as ive been having headaches after work and rubbing my eyes for as long as i can remember but always put it down to being tired and having a hard day at work etc. Its only when i stopped being able to see the projection screen in meeting and noticing double vision that i decided toget checked out and im glad i did now.....thanks again
