When should I ask to be referred?

I have recently been advised by my optician that I have Keratoconus. He said that my left eye is fine at the moment - it is my right eye that is the problem. My brothers both have keratoconus, so in some ways I wasn't surprised to hear that I have it now.
At what stage should I ask my optician to refer me to my GP/specialist at the hospital? Is it ever too early?
Thanks,
Andrew.

I would ask now for a referal, sooner you are on the system the better!
I was refered to my gp and she refered me to the local hospital.

I agree with Donna.
Irrespective of whether you decide to have your KC monitored privately or not i think it would be agood idea to get into the NHS system.
I have attended a hospital eye clinic for over 30 years and have been looked after very well. I appreciate that this is not everybody's experience.
Good luck.
