Hi,

This morning after a sleepless night I noticed a little puss like lump on my eye. I'm wondering if it is an abscess and if so what does one do about it?

How serious are they?

Any pussy lumps need to be looked at. I advise that you phone your eye ward and ask if they can look at your eye tonight.

Thanks Andrew, I went up to see them this afternoon but they refused to see me without a referal from my GP.

I went to my local hospital too but my doctor is away for two weeks and there are no eye surgeries taking place there during this period.

I've made an appointment with my GP for tomorrow morning.

Just wondering what has been advised for anyone else who has had a lump on the grafted eye. I imagine it'll be a quick course of antibiotic drops.

Our experiences could not hav ebeen more different. I did notice something on my eye after my first graft. I telephoned the ward and spoke directly to the ward sister. She told me to make my way to the ward immediately.

When I arrived there was a registrar ophthalmologist who looked at my eye, told me to increase my doseage of chloramphenicol and to return to the regular clinic the following Thursday. i did all of the above and everyting was fine.

Thanks Andrew, I'm sure it will as my recovery to date has been first class.

My main experience of the NHS has been superb and I have no complaints. Everyone at Kent and Canterbury has been great and made it a real pleasure to attend. (if ever going to the doctor can be a pleasure ). Just a shame they don't have an emergency eye clinic there as I know I would have been seen without needing a referal from my GP. I just dread to think what would have happened if my transplant had been rejecting.

Chris, seems a bit ridiculous that no-one will look at your eye, have always been instructed if i suspect anything wrong to go back immediately (they probably regretted saying that to me )

When i discovered the ulcer at new year time, i went to A & E as the eye clinic was closed...one of them near you? For that I was given zovirax...think for 10 days, cant remember.

Another growth i thought i had turned out to be mucus caught on a stitch

And then there was the loose stitch that got infected, (but it wasnt loose apparently) for that I got antibiotics for a week.

You know they are only too happy to look at your beautiful eyes.

I was instructed the same, any changes call the secretary or go to your nearest hospital and get it checked out.

Still, whatever it is isn't growing. Hopefully come tomorrow morning it would have disappeared as I don't really want to waste another day travelling miles back and forth to hospital.

I read that your eye continues to behave at the moment. I really can't complain about mine as it has been as good as gold todate.

I have a feeling that I have started to really overdo things at the moment.

I don't know how mobile you are, or whereabouts in Kent; but there is certainly a Kent hospital with an eye casualty unit (but not at weekends ). It's Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup - right by the "Frognall Corner" exit on the A20.

I've made a note of that for emergencies. Although it is a distance away as I'm down near Canterbury I'd rather travel somewhere where I know I'll get good care than take my chances. Saying that though, it's not that often my doctor is going to be on holiday and I know if he was around the care I would have received would have been first class.

I ended up using some eye drops with anti-biotics that I had previously. I know I probably shouldn't have taken the chance but it was that or leaving them until the next day. My eye settled down and the following morning it felt and looked much better. Today again it near enough back to normal so I am going to leave things until my doctor is back from holiday and have a word with him.
