choosing a consultant

Postby helen jones » Tue 03 Jul 2007 10:06 pm

word of advice to others considering C3R or Intacs. After an initial meeting with a consultant I was fairly confident and about to go ahead then decided to ask him how many he'd actually done before- answer - 2! Now I'm not so confident!! Am going for a second opinion. Any ideas on other crucial questions to ask?

Helen,

That is a vital question to ask and I am really glad that you did!! After have a DALK which is not the same as you going for intacs, but involves a surgeon, I asked about after care and the cost. Any numbers that I could phone in an emergency. What I should expect post surgery etc After the operation you don't want to feel left out and on your own so it is better to ask all the questions before you go ahead with it.

Hoping that you find a good surgeon soon! Take care, love Sweet X x X

Helen,

This highlights a problem we all face. On the one hand we want an experienced consultant performing the operation. By that I mean someone who has done the procedure many times.

On the other hand how else do they get the experience unless somone is brave enough to go through the procedure with them?

Catch 22 pretty much.

Before a surgeon can perform a new techneque, they need to demonstarte they are competant in doing this, so anyone you see ask for the evidence.

Not much use I know, but that is the situation we are in.
Gareth
