Below is a copy of the e-mail I received from Postoptics reagrding the recall of AMO Complete Moisture plus.

Dear Mr Beynon

As you may know from press reports, AMO have announced a recall of Complete Moisture Plus solution following some concerns over an association with a rare eye infection called Acanthamoeba.

This is very bad news indeed, not least for folks who were ready to go on holiday.

Elizabeth Mair circulated the eMail to the Scottish Group (thanks Elizabeth).

The one thing from which we can take heart is that they DID tell us. While it may be inconvenient to hve to start at the last minute to source alternative products, it would be far worse to do damage to one's eye by using an unsafe product.

To be honest from my experience most recalls are part of a precautionary measure and after investigation were not necessary.

Having said that it is always best to play it safe when it comes to any medicine/health care product.

Here's a more throrough report in one of our online magazines. As Gareth says, it is precautionanary.

Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) has recalled its Complete MoisturePlus multipurpose contact lens solution after it was linked by the US Centers for Diseases Control Presentation (CDC) to a serious outbreak of corneal infections.

The CDC interviewed 46 patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and found that of the 39 who wore soft contact lenses, 21 used Complete MoisturePlus. The agency estimated that risk of infection was at least seven times greater for those who used Complete MoisturePlus solution than those who did not.

In a statement, AMO said: 'While AMO continues to work with the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration to further assess the data, it is acting with an abundance of caution to voluntarily recall Complete MoisturePlus from the market.

'There is no evidence to suggest that the voluntary recall is related to a product contamination issue and this does not impact any of AMO's other contact lens care products.'
