UK Keratoconus Self-Help and Support Association

I was told about 4 months ago that I have Keratoconus. Mymain concern is about driving. Even if the condition is treated with lens etc, I am still concerned this will not be enough as my job requires a high standard of eye sight. I work for the ambulance service and my eye sight needs to be in very good condition, as driving is a large aspect of my job. I'm worried about the possible impact this could have on my job.

Your lens fitter should be able to offer advice too.

I have always kept my employer up to date regarding KC, well everyone I have worked for in the past. In my experience being open and explaiing the siuation has been very helpful.

It sounds like you don't have your lenses yet, same as me. The only advice I could give is to take one day at a time if you can. You might find that lenses really bring your eyesight up and you can wear them for a whole shift with no problems. My ex-wife was in the Ambulance Service and I seem to remember some of her colleagues wore glasses, so it must be OK to accept a level of correction. My job requires good eye-sight too and we have corrected and uncorrected standards. Although we need 6/6 and 6/9 (worst eye) corrected it can go down quite a way for uncorrected. Do you drive all the time or do swap about?
