Still here

Postby DJ Smak » Fri 16 Jun 2006 8:28 pm

I haven't posted in awhile so i thought i'd post lol. I'm still workin on getting my lenses down. Have had to have them sent back and redone a few times and right now I'm wearing the latest set for a week to try em out. So far I'm not happy, but maybe I'm being too picky? I can't seem to get good vision out of them for some reason. I can't read small print and I can't read the clock on my dvd player, but i can do both while wearing my glasses. I thought having sclerals would give me beter vision than my glasses, thats why i wanted to get them in the first place, my doctor says that the vision isn't going to get much better than it is with the lenses but i don't know why. I'm paying $350 for the set and its costing me $40 each time they need to redo them. The only positive so far is we seem to have got the comfort level down pat, just can't seem to get the vison as good as I had hoped.

Also, i don't know but its painful when removing them from my eyes, especialy my right eye, the cornea is so sensitive for some reason and its scaring me because I don't know if im becoming intolerant to them. Maybe I should have just suck it out with glasses as long as possible but glasses aren;t that great for me, i can't see things too far away. I'm starting to give up hope to be honest. I may ask again to see a specialist rather than just seeing my optometrist. He's a good guy but i want to know more info that hofeuly a specialist can give.

BTW, the lens I am trying to get right is the macrolens. I don't know if anyone else has ever tried it. Only thing is, I live in Canada and the lab that makes them is in the USA so its taking awhile between having them made, sent to my doctor, me trying them and then having to have them sent back and make a new set for me to try. I figured a scleral lens would be better as it doesnt rest on the cornea but i never had these fitting issues when i had my old corneal RGP;s and they gave me better vision. I may give up on the sclerals and try the smaller ones again. The dyna z intralimbal lens site has a lens that they say is good for pellucid marginal degeneration.I may go that avenue if i cannot get decent results from my macrolens.

DJ Smack,

I think the quality of vision with sclerals depends on where the cone is. From the people I have met and spoken too for every person that gets good vision there is another that needs sclerals with prescription glasses on top to get what we would consider normal vision.

As we live so much with poor vision, I think we do demand a lot, but why should we accept less than anyone else?

today i decided to switch the lenses around and put them in the oposite eye and i can see a little bit better, im guessing the factory may have put them in the case wrong, i dunno. I emailed my doc and told him so when i see him on friday I'll let him check me out with them switched. Although im still hoping that to attain a bit better vision but if not then this may have to do. I can only hope!!

DJ

Let us know when you find out for sure whether you did have your lenses "switched" left to right and right to left.

My eyes were always a bit sore when I took out my scleral, but what a wonderful time I then had rubbing my eyes!

This behaviour is not recommended for those reading at home. Andrew was an experienced eye rubber and knew how to minimize any damage to his eye.

My doc decided i should stick with these lenses, reversed. My vision is 20/30 and 20/40. Its not what i had hoped but he thinks its good so I'll go with them

On a side note, my prescription is

Sphere Cylinder Axis

OD +2.25 -6.50 090
OS + 0.50 -2.75 096

I see my doc again in 4 months. I don't really know what those numbers mean but I know others here do.

I talked to him about my options and whether or not i am near having to ever have a graft done. He said my corneas are still healthy, a bit thin but not too bad and its just the astigmatism thats got my vision all whacked. He talked about how treatment options are always newcoming and in a few years the way they treat it could be tottally different and to have hope. He talked of orthokeratology and the advances that they are having with it. Basically he kept me calm and told me not to worry.

I think in the Frequently Asked Question part of the forum Lynn White has had a go at explaining this in Laymans terms.
