Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, it's my first post.

I got back from the opticians today with a new glasses prescription and a referral to see a consultant due to my optician thinking I may have keratoconus. I have read lots about it this evening but am worried about my prescription.
SPH is fine with+1.25 and +1.00 but my CYL is -6.0 and -5.5. I don't know a lot about keratoconus but this seems a lot higher than anyone else I know and also what I have read on here with people generally at 2-3.

I guess I'm Just wondering whether this is normal for someone with keratoconus or whether it's a wrong prescription. I can't find any glasses that will take lenses at -5.5 & -6.0 CYL!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I'm afraid the only way to test whether there's a mistake would be to have another eye test somewhere else. I'm not sure there is a 'normal' for KC - all our eyes are different. My CYL readings are around 3 but I've had corneal transplants.
If your readings are correct, then you'd probably do better in rigid contact lenses, which may well be recommended for you when you're seen at the hospital. I hope you won't have long to wait for that.

It might be worth asking your optician if they can suggest some glasses for you.

A few years ago I ordered a pair of glasses and a few days later I was rang up the opticians. They said could I choose another frame as, due to the thickness of the lenses, the arms wouldn't close in pair I'd chosen. They then suggested a selection of frames which would take my prescription.
