Post graft and lifting etc

Postby dalbeath » Mon 12 Sep 2016 3:27 pm

I am due to have a full thickness graft in the next couple of weeks.

I know you should avoid lifting things as it increases your IOP and puts strain on the stitches. But what is lifting too much?

Thinking about say shopping bags, how many 1kg bags of sugar in a bag is too many in the first month? What about in later months?

I know this may sound like a daft question but we live on a farm and for the last 2 months I have had corneal glue on my eye and told not to lift. You would be amazed how often I find myself going to lift a bucket of water, some animal feed etc and wondering how heavy is too heavy.

Thanks

Yes, no one ever seems to define what 'heavy' lifting means! But after a bit of googlling, I did find one person's account which said their consultant told them 10-15lb in the first month or two.So that would be 4 or 5 bags of sugar in metric? And i guess bending with bent knees rather than bending the back and head would be better. But hopefully when you go for the op, you'll be able to get some definitive advice from your surgeon.
All the very best with the graft. And do keep checking what the rules are at the follow up appts in the months after your op.

Yes, it's more than I thought too, so do check what your surgeon says. The last thing you want to do is to risk your new transplant! All the best.
