Scleral lenses

Postby PSherman » Sat 14 Nov 2015 9:34 am

I'm going through the process of fitting mini scleral lenses after trying around 10 sets of soft over 4 months and not getting the results. I have worn RGP for around 20 years but would love to have lenses that don't get dust or dirt under and have to be taken out each time.
So will mini scleral lenses be worth the time or should I try piggy backing? Any information would be great.

Hi Paul,

One of the problems with keratoconus is that what works well for one person doesn't for another.

It is pity that the soft lenses didn't work for you but mini-sclerals might. Whereas to find out whether or not soft lenses would work you have had to allow time for the demoulding affects on the cornea from years of RGP wear it should be easier to establish if mini-sclerals will work for you. Mini-sclerals could be easier to use than piggy-back lenses as you are only dealing with one set of lenses.

As for piggy-backing if your current RGPs fit well and give good vision you could ask if you could piggy-back them, although I doubt if piggy-backing would be offered unless there are other issues with the RGP fit such as intolerance and wear time. Note that it still possible to get dust under the RGP which can be uncomfortable.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions do ask.

Lia
