Thanks for the advice, new lens on it's way- the nearest appointment I can get is in November.
I will try removing my seatbelt when practising on Thursday. I was initially using the mirros to help my way round, because I was aware that my lens would probably fall out. however, the instructor told me not to do this unfortunately. Ach well, we will see how it goes.

This is hard.
I hope your new lens arrives soon; in the meantime you have the consolation that you have now emerged into a section of the population otherwise occupied by the elderly and infirm: you are the sort of person who loses his contact lens when reversing the car!
