Thanks. The technique of getting the semi sclerals in and out, is that comparable with that of the RGPs?

One of the issues I had with the piggy back lenses was getting them in and out.

Yep. You can use the 2 finger hard blink method to remove them same as corneal RGPs, or slide them over to the side slightly and pull them out. Sclerals have to be filled with saline before inserting, and sometimes people experience pressure due to the suction removing them as they are so big and all encompassing on the eye

If you got to the so2clear website there is a fitting guide video that shows you them in comparison with RGPs and the whole process of putting them in, taking out etc

I'm in R&D too, but you employers have a duty of car to you so any threat of loosing your job to have your eyes looked at puts your employers at great risk of breaching the disbaility act and employment laws through unfair dismissal.

KC is an anomolly in the world of R&D as it doen't follow any regular rules which is why lens fitting as stated by most optometrists & ophthalmologists is as much an art form as it is a science.

To insert piggy back lenses I first put in the soft lenses and allow them to settle for a minute or two and then put the RGPs on top. I make sure that the RGP is quite wet to reduce the probability of getting an air bubble between the lenses.

To remove piggy back lenses I remove the RGPs first by flicking them out in the normal way and then I remove the soft ones by gently sliding them and pinching them out. The technique for removing soft lenses is quite different to that for RGPs so it did take me a couple weeks to get used to removing the soft lenses.

Hope this helps,

Lia

Thanks for your input.

If I may – when you say you wet your RGPs a lot before inserting them onto the piggy backs, is that with something like the Boston Conditioning solution? Because of the preservatives in this and other similar solutions, I can’t use any hard contact eye products that have preservatives as they dry out my eyes. Also, when I had tried the piggy backs, when I put in some eye drops into my eyes, occasionally I got a haziness (like when glasses are fogged up) with my eyes. Does that ring any bells with you, if so, how did/ do you manage that?

I did struggle with the pull and pinch technique of getting the soft lenses out of my eyes, partly because of the difficulty of actually feeling these on my fingers. Any suggestions on this front?

Jugger,

Sometimes I use the Boston conditioning solution to insert them and sometimes I use saline. If I use the conditioning solution I find I am less likely to get bubbles between the lens as it is thicker than saline.

I rarely use re-wetting drops when I have my lenses in so I've not experienced the fogging you refer to.

As for removing soft lenses I gently slide them to the inner corner of the eye where they buckle and can be pinched out. I also can't feel the soft lenses when they are in my eyes, nor can I tell from my vision and as they are low powered, but they do have a blue handling tint so I can see them on my eyes when I look in a mirror.

Lia,

Thanks for addressing my questions. If I may, 2 other questions to help my try and square this circle. Not having ever experienced that issue, the bubbles you speak of, what is the result of these/ problems that they cause, and if they do happen after you have applied the solution, how do you rectify the problem?

On a average day, how long are you able to have the lenses in your eyes with the piggy backs?

Jugger,

A bubble between my two lenses is typically about 1/4 inch across and looks like a dull area on the RGP. The bubble causes ghosting - if I get a bubble like this when I put the RGP in the ghost seems to hover 6 inches above things. If the ghosting doesn't go within a few minutes I take the RGP out and re-insert. The bubble sometimes goes by itself but takes hours to do so.

There is another type of bubble that I used to get under my left RGP before I piggy backed with the soft lens. I'd complained that the vision with the lens deteriorated during the day and needed a clean. Apparently it wasn't a need of a clean but tiny bubbles had formed under the lens.

Typically I wear my lenses for 15 hours a day during the week and slightly less at the weekend when I'll potter around the house for an hour or two in my glasses - until I need to see something.

Lia
