Post corneal cross linking infection
Hi my son is recovering from a post op infection. His vision is almost nil in that eye, and very blurred in his other eye. Anybody had this experience and if so, did vision return? Thanks.

Re: Post corneal cross linking infection
I think this is a rare complication, so I'm not sure if we have any forum users with experience of this, though we do have some who have had 'corneal haze' after CXL which does usually clear eventually. Presumably the infection is being treated but how long this will take is probably something only the medics seeing your son can answer. It's obviously a worrying time, but I hope he'll see an improvement soon.

Very sorry to hear this. Have you not received any advice from your consultant? To be honest mine was pretty useless with information so you're probably experiencing the same thing.
There's lots of information out there if you Google it. Most complications with CXL are cleared after a year... but everyone's different.

Re: Post corneal cross linking infection
Thanks for your help - my son's cornea has now healed ok from the infection although the consultant has said there is some scarring which could take some time to settle.
The consultant has been helpful, although vision is blurred in both eyes and my son can only read the largest letters on the optical test.
Once his condition has settled down they will try both eyes with contacts, although a corneal graft has been indicated for the left. I've started research on that as well. Any experiences with that welcome.

It's good to hear that the infection has gone and hopefully contact lenses will make a big difference to your son's vision.
As for corneal grafts, there are plenty of us here with experience of those, so do ask any questions. And if you'd like a copy of our information booklet on KC, do e-mail your postal address to anne@keratoconus-group.org.uk and I'll send you one.

Re: Post corneal cross linking infection
After my initial hazing on CXL I was unable to read even A4 sized letters! That lasted for a couple of weeks, and then I could just about make them out for 2-3 months following that.
Now, although the blurriness is still there, I can read all but the last two lines. Things will improve, it just takes (a lot) of time unfortunately.
