Hybrid Lenses

Postby PSherman » Tue 06 Oct 2015 1:36 pm

I have been using RGP lenses for 20 years and trying to move over to soft but finding it hard to obtain the results. Any information on hybrid lenses would be great.

Hi PSherman,

And welcome to the forum.

It can take time to move from RGPs to soft lenses as the eye needs to demould from years of wearing RGPs. One way of doing this is moving the eye which is having problems with the RGP to the soft lens first so vision is maintained with the other eye while the first one adjusts.

Hybrids would be an alternative as they provide the comfort of the soft lens with the vision of the RGP without the time spent demoulding from the RGP. I've not tried hybrids but another possibility would be to piggyback your RGPs with a disposable soft lens underneath. I've been piggybacking my RGPs for a few years and I find it works well for me.

Lia,
Thank you for the info. I have also found that my glasses are not much use any more since I have started with the soft lenses. My concern is that my eyes are starting to deteriorate once again but could this be just because they are settling down to the soft lens. Do you just piggy back your RGP on to a standard soft lens?

Paul,

The soft lenses I use are daily disposable silicon hydrogel lenses with a power of -0.5 dioptres. The power of the soft lens doesn't affect the vision of the RGPs. The hospital tried three different brands of lenses before they were happy with the way the lenses work together.

Your eyes could be deteriorating, but the reason that your glasses are no longer much use is probably due to the demoulding affect on your corneas since you are no longer wearing RGPs. Once your eyes have settled down to wearing the soft lenses you could get new glasses and you might find that the vision before and after lens wear is similar. As I wear RGPs I find that my vision with glasses varies and I get better vision in the morning, prior to lens wear, than I do in the evening after I've taken the lenses out.

Lia
