BBC1's Inside Out programme at 7.30 tonight (the London version of this regional programme) features the work of the Moorfields Eye Bank. The programme will go behind the scenes in the eye bank to look at the work of the service and the importance of eye tissue donation in sight-saving surgery. It shows the work of our corneal service, theatre staff and transplant surgical team as well as that of the eye bank team. Two patients who have undergone surgery by consultant ophthalmologist Bruce Allan talk about their conditions and the difference the treatment has made to their lives, and the son of a donor relates how much it meant to his dad to know that his tissue was going to enable 10 sight-saving operations to take place. Eye bank manager Khilan Shah explains the role of the eye bank and the process of donation; Bruce Allan talks about the surgery and how operations can be cancelled due to a lack of tissue; and fellow and MRC funded researcher Maninder Bhogal highlights the research he is undertaking into new ways to prepare corneas for surgery using lasers.
Well worth watching! And hopefully it will be available on i-player for those of you in other parts of the UK
