NHS Cost - Sclera Lens

Postby sine220 » Sat 02 Feb 2013 7:22 pm

Hi,

Just looking for a bit of guidance.....
I've been working with my highstreet optician for a while trying to get a sclera lens to work for me......

basically, the ones i've been given give me a really red halo round the inside edge of the lens after 2 hours wear. The vision is amazing but I cannot seem to get used to them. My eyes are also really dry.

My optician has now advised that he plans to tweak my lenses again in an attempt to fix this, however, he has said he is going to refer me to the company who supply the lens so they can assess me to try to iron out any issues he's missed. The company's called "scotlens".

However, he's advised me that if I get these lenses they will cost £52 per lens......where the first pair (the pair that gave me problems) were free....?!
I dont really understand this and I'm concerned if get the lenses the original issue will still be there (and i'll be £104 out of pocket!)

Is this something any of you chaps have experienced? Do any of you know the NHS policy on this?

Any info on your experiences appreciated

The NHS and its pricing policies do not seem to be consistent accross the country, but I had thought that there was a universal application of the cost of hospital dispensed contact lenses:

£52.50 per lens per year. That is to say that if I am dispensed a lens and it needs to be replaced (for any reason other than my having list it) within 12 months, the replacement is free.
